200th Anniversary of the Kingdom of Westphalia and Jerome Bonaparte Exhibit

The moment during the Jena/Hassenhausen battle where Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand von Braunschweig received his fatal wound. His son, Friedrich Wilhelm became the "Black Duke".

 

 

 

 

On the next picture, the musket ball is shown, that had killed the Duke. The scribbled note in the background is the confirmation of a field surgeon with the name Völker.

 

 

 

 

The church ledger of Hassenhausen is seen which was used to treat the smashed bone of a wounded soldier. The blood is still seen on the pages.

 

 

 

 

Napoleon at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Oct. 27th 1806. With the downfall of Friedrich the Great's "Old Prussia" the way was clear for a Westphalian Kingdom.

 

 

 

 

Jerome as Conqueror of Breslau in 1807. Jerome was commander of the IX. Corps in 1807 and as such was able to capture the city of Breslau. The mayor and the town officials presenting the town keys to Jerome. It was one of the "heroic deeds" which were used to glorify and legitimate the rule of the very young King during his reign in Westphalia. The artist shows Jerome like the famous Friedrich II. of Prussia as conqueror of Silesia in the Seven Years War.

A French cartoon. The Queen Luise of Prussia, who is wearing the uniform of her Dragoon Regiment, is shown as the "real man" on the Prussian throne. Her discouraged husband, with his disintegrating crown, is standing in the background. She died in 1810. The German nationalists did make her a national heroine.
